Fluorescent Bulb, the Real Energy Savior, Brings Lower Utility Bills

andrewsmithukby andrewsmithukDec 18th 2014

Fluorescent lamps or fluorescent tubes are low pressure mercury-vapor gas discharge lamps that use fluorescence to create visible light. An electric current in the gas kindles mercury vapor which generates short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb to radiate.Fluorescent tubes convert electrical energy into functional light much more effectively than incandescent lamps. The dazzling efficacy of a fluorescent lamp can go beyond 100 lumens per watt, many times an incandescent bulb’s efficacy with comparable light output.

Though fluorescent lamp fixtures are costlier than incandescent lamps, the lower energy consumption offsets the higher initial cost. Such lamps are now available in various physical and online stores in several popular sizes as incandescent lightsand are used as energy-saving alternatives in homes. These are better than incandescent lamps in many ways, such as fluorescent lamps consume only 25%-35% of the energy used by incandescent products to provide a similar amount of light and last about 10 times longer.

Fluorescent lamps are usually of two types as follows:

  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) that are usually found with basic ballasts and screw bases, used in household fixtures.
  • Fluorescent tubes, in other words circline lamps, are commonly used for task lighting, for instance garages and under cabinet fixtures, and for lighting huge areas in commercial buildings.

Fluorescent tubes, the most common type of fluorescent lighting, are rarely found in residential buildings. These are designed in sync to suit to illumination of wide areas of commercial or industrial buildings, because of their highly energy efficiency. On the other hand, circline lamps are basically circular and tube-type fluorescent lamps. In residential buildings, these are commonly used for portable task lighting or other special applicationswhere compact light source along with low-temperature and high-luminous output is needed.

Therefore it can be said that compact fluorescent light bulbs and tubes come in lowest possible price, cast more pleasant light and most importantly, force their power-hungry competitors from store-shelves.
